MATTHEW SINGER is a Member of the Firm with a trial and appellate practice. Mr. Singer focuses on business disputes, employment lawsuits, and tort cases. He represents businesses, individuals, school districts and municipalities in a broad range of litigated matters including contract and franchise disputes, employment and discrimination claims, wrongful death, real estate and premises liability, environmental disputes, and fraud and unfair trade practices.
In addition to his trial practice, Mr. Singer has an active appellate practice and has successfully represented clients in a number of matters before the Alaska Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior to joining JDO, Mr. Singer served as a law clerk to Justice Alexander O. Bryner of the Alaska Supreme Court.
Mr. Singer has a strong commitment to pro bono and public interest representation. He previously served on the Alaska Bar Association's pro bono services committee and regularly dedicates a portion of his practice to pro bono service.
Mr. Singer's experience includes:
- Achieving a substantial settlement in favor of a business located on a former gas station property in a real estate dispute involving environmental contamination.
- Representing school districts in a wide range of matters, including: successfully defending a school district against a challenge to its award of a $45 million school bus contract; establishing a new rule of law that a school district cannot be held liable when a contractor fairs to obtain a required bond; defending against discrimination and employment claims filed by former employees.
- Representing plaintiffs in a class action product liability and unfair trade practices action.
- Successfully defending cities and municipalities in a variety of actions including: a whistleblower action filed by former employees; a wrongful death and excessive force claim stemming from an arrest by a public safety officer; and wrongful discharge and overtime claims filed by former employees.
- Representing plaintiffs in professional malpractice and business disputes.
- Representing automobile dealerships and car rental companies in various franchise disputes.
- Representing pro bono clients in a number of matters, including a landlord-tenant trial, an employment discrimination claim against Walmart, and representing a nonprofit Alaska Native organization when a Washington D.C. lobbying firm misappropriated the organization's identity to promote a project harmful to their subsistence lifestyle.
Mr. Singer speaks regularly on topics related to litigation and employment law. He is conversational in Spanish.
